A Sierra Nevada Classic Returns

If you ever flew around ORBX’s Blue Canyon-Nyack Airport in FSX or P3D, you might remember it included two additional “lite” airstrips. One of those airstrips, my personal favorite, happened to be Limberlost Ranch.

I set out to recreate this scenery simply because I missed all the fun I had flying into it. Only this time, I wanted to see it with the level of detail and accuracy we have come to expect in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

4 Years In The Making (Kinda)

Limberlost Ranch was one of those projects that lived most of it’s development life on the backburner. It’s been the origin of many reused model parts across multiple sceneries, and even the start of some tech, like the parallax style pool used in my Bald Eagle Airfield scenery (Though, this has since been replaced at Limberlost).

The very first work in progress previews of Limberlost Ranch were taken back on August 9, 2022, with the project being officially announced over on the FSDeveloper forums that following December. To put that in perspective, that was before the release of Forwood Farm and the Got Friends Wilga. So, yeah. It’s been a while…

Just over a year ago in late April of 2025, work began once more on the scenery and continued on for several months with a good amount of progress being made. Though, a bit later I would decide to take a hiatus from scenery development to change things up and create the 1500R Sport.

I would not start on the scenery again until the very end of January, 2026.

Over the next few months I would bounce back and forth between the scenery and our current (softly announced) Pietenpol Air Camper project, before deciding to put 100% of my focus into just getting the airport done in late April.

Now a little over a month later, I am proud to announce that Limberlost Ranch has finally succeeded in reaching it’s release date!

It took way longer than I ever expected it to, but seeing it done – now I can step back and finally begin to appreciate all of the work that went into it.

Built for 2020, Upgraded for 2024

Limberlost Ranch was built on the foundation of MSFS 2020 before making the transition over to 2024. Both versions of the scenery share the same base features, but the 2024 version isn’t just a simple port. It has been built to leverage 2024 native features like 3D characters, SimProp Containers (taking advantage of the new modular structure), native EX1 code, updated lighting, and material animations driving the upgraded caustics in the pool.

To better support 2024’s avatar mode, several models in the scenery were updated with more advanced collision models to allow you to explore the ranch in its entirety. One of my personal favorites being the pool, where you can jump in and climb back out using either of the ladders.

The Ranch House got the same treatment, complete with collidable walls, railings, and furniture. Jump on the bed if you want – nobody’s going to stop you. If I modeled a platform or a set of steps, you can walk on it or climb it in 2024.
